WHAT IS A MANAGEMENT EVALUATION?

A management or manager evaluation is a process where employees and direct reports of a particular manager have the opportunity to provide feedback on the management skills, styles and performance of the chosen manager.

They should form part of any performance evaluation system as whilst it is common that managers get to report on their staff's performance, often managers can be the reason for poor employee performance, so ensuring the performance review process is fair means having staff also review their managers.

WHY DO I NEED A MANAGEMENT EVALUATION?

If you have managers, and they are tasked with evaluating employees, it is really only fair that employees get the same opportunity.

In many companies, managers often find themselves in positions of power and sometimes with little training, or not the appropriate training for their role type or department. This can result in poor performance across whole departments, in environments seemingly under control.

A manager is reponsible for the performance and motivation of staff, but if they are not able to complete their duties and guide their team, companies can experience high staff churn, poor financial results and a general feeling of unrest in the workplace.

By giving staff (anonymously) the opportunity to give feedback, it allows executives and boards to take remedial action such as providing leadership training and counselling.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS MANAGEMENT EVALUATION?

The management evaluation template contains 26 statements that describe various management components.

Questions used to evaluate managers include the following:

  • My supervisor is fair in determining my work assignment
  • My supervisor encourages innovation
  • My supervisor accepts positive feedback
  • My supervisor avoids favourtism

Responses range from “Not At All” to “Very True.”

Executive teams then collate and review employees feedback of managers and use as part of a wider performance review process. Keeping in mind there may be personal biases that occur, having multiple staff review managers (even those not directly reporting to that manager) will give insights into how beneficial they are for staff morale and improving overall business results.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A MANAGEMENT EVALUATION?

If you have managers within your business (or supervisors) you'll want to know they are doing the best possible by your staff so they stay highly productive, motivated and engaged on a daily basis. Poor management = poor results. That is universal.

Utilising the management evaluation framework in the template, when forming part of a greater performance review strategy, helps get real and honest feedback from those direectly reporting to a particular manager, and even those that simply work in the same office or on site with a manager.

By asking employees how they feel about a manager:

  • You are encouraging active feedback
  • Shows them you genuinely care about them as an employee
  • Helps you understand where your manager can improve
  • Can catch poor behaviour quickly before you lose key personnel
  • Identifies gaps in your hiring or promotion process

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T HAVE A MANAGEMENT EVALUATION?

If you have managers and supervisors, you are placing a great deal of responsibility in their hands. So it is YOUR responsibility to ensure they are trained and capable of doing their job.

When you promote within your company you retain vital IP and provide growth opportunities for key staff, but if you are not empowering them with the correct leadership training, you're actually doing them a disservice, and maybe even throwing them into the lions den. A tool like this management evaluation template can simply and effectively give you the insights you need to understand where gaps lie, and gives visibility to staff who may be at critical stages of considering leaving your employment because of poor leadership and management.
