Description

What is a Job Safety Assessmennt or JSA?

A Job Safety Assessment or JSA document is used to determine the various risks associated with varying jobs and duties in a company.

The JSA Safety Assessment Risk provides details on various activities and assesses their risks.

A JSA is a safety management tool in which the risks or hazards of a specific job in the workplace are identified, and then measures to eliminate or control those hazards are determined and implemented.

Our Job Safety Analysis Excel Template includes the following segments for consideration:

  • Level of Risk (Risk Matrix)
  • Likelihood Ratings
  • Consequence Ratings
  • Hazards
  • Controls
  • Person Responsible

Individuals responsible for each duty are listed on the form and given instructions on how to perform assigned tasks. Our JSA example is pre completed so you may be able to use some of the data already in the JSA template and make it relevant to your worksite, event, or business.

Benefits of having a Job Safetly Analysis Worksheet or JSA

If you are doing any kind of work that may cause injury or risk to personal safety for your employees, the general public and/or property - then you need a JSA.

When you are writing your job safety analysis worksheet up it helps you to really consider what risks are associated with the event / site / action you are intending to do. By taking the time to consider all risks you can plan for the worst, and ensure a smooth result on site.. One that ensures all people and property are protected from risk or injury.

Having a JSA in place helps you to meet safety standards. Those of your company but also those in public spaces. The job safety analysis helps you to comply with nationaly safety standards, regulations and laws. In turn this protects your company from legal and financial penalites.

A job safety analysis worksheet improves communication between your team and third party contractors.

A JSA can help to teach new employees about the risks and protections they need to be aware of.

And ultiamtely, and most importantly, they help to prevent hazardous conditions.

What happens if I don't use a JSA?

Consequences of not having a JSA complete when in a potentially hazardous environment are:

  1. Losing the trust of your staff. Whether you are a small or large business - ensuring your staff know that their health and safety is of utmost importance to you, will be the difference between having a high churn of staff annd having employees that stick around because they know you have their best interested at heart.

  2. Not being prepared, and causing injury to staff or damage to property. Even worksites and events with robust JSA's experience problems, but they are far less than those without. By not being prepared you will likely not put the right controls in place, or give your staff the tools to know what controls and precautions to take - potentially resulting in property damage, injury or even death.

  3. Losing clients or business. Most public spaces, events and worksites require proof that a job safety analysis has been performed prior to sending your staff and contractors to site. Failure to provide these documents along with appropriate insurances could see you lose the business and potentially the client altogether.
